Decorators' Choice

Every cake decorator will use crispy treats (AKA cereal treats) at one point or another.

There is nothing like these cereal blocks for carving, hand modelling and also creating reliable sturdy structures! This is the go to recipe, I used over and over every time I was decorating. It is perfect and works like a charm. It is moldable and very easily shaped or carved.

These treats are not just for cake decorating, they can be dipped in chocolate then sprinkled with sprinkles, chocolate shavings, nuts… or they can be topped with a sugar flower and stacked on a cake stand or tiered platter and placed on a desserts buffet…

Here is how to make them…

Ingredients

  • 4 cups Rice Krispies
  • 5 cups Mini Marshmallows
  • 1/4 cup Shortening or butter

In a medium pot, melt the shortening or butter then add the mini marshmallows and stir to melt.

Once the marshmallows have melted (no longer have a shape) remove the pot from the heat and pour in the rice krispies. Mix all together very well to fully coat the krispies with the melted marshmallows.

For blocks to carve, straightaway stack the mixture in square or rectangular cake tins lined with parchment paper. Press the mixture very firmly, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Otherwise, wait for the mixture to cool enough to handle, and start hand modelling into the desired shape.
