Occasional acceptance is nice actually!

I am a purist when it comes to hot dogs.

I like them with mustard and ketchup only. But on occasion, Chilli Dogs represent an excellent variation, making the regular hot dog more like a fabulous treat. These are amazing, and super easy to make. You are going to love them. If you make them in minis, you can even serve them at a cocktail party.

Hot dogs are delicious. I think they are the ultimate snack, at the movie theatres, the side of the street, at diners or  even at home… hot dogs are always super tasty!

Before diving into the recipe here are some suggestions that go very well with hot dogs:

  • DS Lemon & Chili pickles
  • Assorted DS Pickles, finely chopped into a salsa mixed with mayo
  • BBQ Sauce & Crispy Bacon
  • Guacamole, Tomato Salsa & Sour cream (nacho the dog!)
  • Your favourite melted cheese

Ingredients

Serves: 8
  • 8 large hot dog rolls or 20 mini hot dog rolls
  • 8 large hot dogs or 20 cocktail hot dogs (if making mini)
  • 500g minced beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 can red kidney beans, rinsed and drained
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 cans chopped tomatoes in tomato juice
  • 1 glass red wine, or 4 tbsp red grape vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1-2 tsp DS Smoked Shatta
  • 1 bunch coriander, finely chopped
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese or your favourite cheese

Start by making the Chilli. Season the minced beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and chilli powder.

In a large saucepan, cook the seasoned minced meat and chopped onion, till the onion is softened and the meat is slightly browned. Stir in the beans, chopped tomatoes with their juices, tomato paste and DS Smoked Shatta. Stir to mix add wine or vinegar and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, simmer, covered on low heat for 35 minutes.

Meanwhile Prepare the hot dogs, and buns. You can place a hot dog on the plain bun then top with the chili sauce and shredded cheese, or you can add condiments as you like.

For The Classic Chili Dog

Spread some mustard on the bun, top with the prepared hot dog, top with the chilli sauce sprinkle lightly with finely chopped fresh coriander, top with shredded cheese, then grill until the cheese is melted.

You can also sprinkle with fresh chopped onions and pickle relish for extra flavour (truly diner style).
